Emy is a Kegel biofeedback trainer

So, what is ‘Kegel’ training?

Kegel training involves the contracting and relaxing of the pelvic floor muscles. Like any exercise, Kegel training can help maintain the health and strength of these muscles and ligaments.

With regular performance, Kegel exercises can support optimal sexual function, enhance bladder and bowel control, and reduce the risk of incontinence after childbirth and pelvic organ prolapse.

How does Emy assist with Kegels?

Although Kegel activation can be done without a biofeedback device, the Emy can help with targeted training for pelvic floor muscles in a regular routine. The Emy App enables fun, interactive Kegels in an achievable timeframe for your weekly schedule.

Progress is also monitored through the App so you can achieve your pelvic floor goals, which can also be undertaken in conjunction with your health care professional.

Main indications for the Emy:

  • Improve bladder control: With regular Kegel training, women can significantly reduce or eliminate their bladder incontinence, while minimising the risk of organ prolapse through preventative pelvic floor strengthening.
  • Target intimate well-being: By strengthening the pelvic floor with the Emy, women can tighten the muscles and walls of their vagina, contributing to increased intensity of vaginal contractions and pleasure during sex.
  • Assist postpartum recovery and tone: The Emy can help prepare and strengthen the pelvic floor any time before conception to prepare for pregnancy and childbirth.Pelvic floor strengthening is especially important to support pelvic floor recovery and basic muscle tone after giving birth*.
Whether you had a vaginal or cesarean delivery, your pelvic floor plays an important role in supporting the organs of the pelvis. During pregnancy, simply carrying the weight of the baby can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, so it’s important to train them even after a C-section.

Why are standalone Kegel exercises often a struggle?

Targeting pelvic floor muscles effectively is a common struggle among women. Due to culture and psychological barriers, it is not unusual for women to grow up unaware of the location or sensation of activating their pelvic floor muscles. Activating your pelvic floor muscles correctly can take some practice and motivation, which Emy seeks to assist with!

Realtime biofeedback also assists with overall engagement with Kegel exercises, with this App/Device combination, making sessions both fun and easy in your home life.

*For questions on when to start pelvic floor training postpartum, we recommend consulting your Health Care Professional.

What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and ligaments located within the pelvis, stretching like a hammock, between the pubic bone and the tailbone.

The pelvic floor muscles give you the ability to control the release of urine, faeces and flatus and to delay emptying until it is convenient¹. When you contract the pelvic floor muscles, they lift the internal organs of the pelvis and tighten the openings of the vagina, anus, and urethra. Relaxing the pelvic floor allows passage of urine and faeces.

Pelvic floor muscles are also important for sexual function. In women, voluntary contractions or squeezing of the pelvic floor contribute to sexual sensation and arousal.

The pelvic floor muscles in women also provide support for the baby during pregnancy and need to be relaxed during the birthing process¹.

Symptoms of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction include²:

  • leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing or running
  • failing to reach the toilet in time
  • passing wind from either the anus or vagina when bending over or lifting
  • reduced sensation in the vagina
  • tampons that dislodge or fall out
  • a distinct bulge at the vaginal opening
  • a sensation of heaviness in the vagina
  • a heaviness or dragging in the pelvis or back
  • recurrent urinary tract infections, or recurrent thrush
  • vulval pain, pain with sex, inability to orgasm

Causes of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction include:

  • supporting the weight of the uterus during pregnancy
  • vaginal childbirth, which may overstretch the muscles
  • the pressure of obesity
  • chronic constipation and straining to poo
  • constant coughing
  • some forms of surgery that require cutting the muscles
  • lower levels of oestrogen after menopause
  • pelvic floor muscle tension caused by painful periods, endometriosis

How to use Emy Kegel trainer

Download on the App Store

Key Steps

  1. Insert the Emy into your vagina
Made from soft, medical-grade silicone, the Emy is easy to insert – with or without lubricant.
  2. Connect to the App
The Emy connects to the Emy app, which you can download for free in Google Play or the App Store.
  3. Start your Kegel exercises
The app suggests a personalised and fun training program to meet your own specific training goals. Define the frequency and duration of your program and activate reminders that fits your home schedule.
  4. Monitor your contractions in real time
Thanks to biofeedback, you can view your pelvic floor contractions within the games. Track and follow your personal progress!

How often should I use the Emy and for how long?

There is no fixed rule. The general recommendation is 5-20 mins per session. You might want to start with shorter sessions, for example, a couple times a week.

The app offers a variety of programs to meet your individual needs.

You can also define the frequency and duration of your sessions with a Health Care Professional. The app has an additional feature that allows them to login and customise sessions, if you’d like to use Emy to support your overall pelvic health management. They can also quickly view your Symptom tracker and Kegel progress via the App.

How does Emy use Bluetooth?

The Emy Kegel trainer uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. The waves emitted by the base of the trainer (which remains outside the vagina) are extremely weak.

To illustrate, the power of the waves emitted by your smartphone is 1 to 2 watts. The power of Wi-Fi is 0.1 watts and the power of Bluetooth is 0.001 watts.

In other words, the waves emitted by Emy via Bluetooth are 1,000 times weaker than the waves emitted by the phone in your pocket.

The Emy Kegel trainer complies with all current standards regarding medical devices.

How long does Emy take to charge when first connected?

Emy takes approximately 2 hours to charge from an empty battery.

How do I connect Emy to the mobile app?

  • Make sure Emy is fully charged before using it for the first time
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone
  • If you have an Android smartphone, you must also enable GPS in the location settings
  • Shake the trainer to turn it on and make sure the indicator light on the central part blinks for more than one minute

Open the mobile app, click on “Start an exercise,” select “Complete” , navigate through the screens, click on “I am ready,” and the app should quickly connect to the trainer without any prior pairing.

If you already paired Emy with your smartphone, please remove the trainer in your phone’s Bluetooth settings. The Emy Kegel trainer automatically connects to the app without any prior pairing.

What do the indicator lights show?

The indicator lights show the status of the trainer:

  • Light blinking on the central part of the trainer: Emy is on and attempting to connect to the mobile app
  • Light turned off on the central part of the trainer: Emy is in standby mode
  • Short flash every 3 seconds on the central part of the trainer: Emy is connected to the app
  • 3 quick blinks on the central part of the trainer: the battery is low and must be recharged

When Emy is charging, a light on the upper part of the trainer stays lit. This light goes out once the trainer is fully charged.

What are the dimensions of Emy?

Emy is 4.1 inches long (10.5 cm) and 1.3 inches wide (3.4 cm).

Which position is best for my exercises?

To make the most of Emy, we recommend that you get into a semi-supine position (flat on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor).

When lying comfortably, spread your legs, and use a pillow to raise your neck. Place your phone near your thighs to keep the Bluetooth signal as unobstructed as possible.

When inserting Emy, make sure the brightest part of the indicator light on the central part of the trainer is facing the ceiling.

Do not cover the base of the trainer with your hands. Covering the white part of the base (which contains the Bluetooth antenna) can result in a loss of signal strength. In general, you will not need to hold or move the trainer during your exercises.

Can I use a lubricant with the Emy for insertion?

A water-based lubricant can help eliminate any pain or irritation you might feel when inserting the Emy Kegel trainer.

You should not feel pain when using Emy. If the pain continues even after using a lubricant, we recommend that you consult a Health Care Professional.

How do I stop the trainer from sliding out during my exercises?

In general, you will not need to hold or move the trainer during your exercises. Covering the white part of the base (which contains the Bluetooth transmitter) can result in a loss of signal strength.

Emy is suitable for all body types: depending on your physique, the base of the trainer may stick out more or less from your vagina.

If the trainer slides out during your contractions, you may be pushing instead of contracting. Check your Kegel technique or consult a Health Care Professional to assist you.

You may also be using too much lubricant, and this could be contributing to slippage.

If the problem continues, feel free to contact us.

How do I know if I’m contracting correctly?

The mobile app contains instructions on how to do your exercises and contract your pelvic floor. Go to “Help & Advice” > “How to properly contract”

You should not be contracting any other muscles except those of your pelvic floor. Place your hands on your buttocks, thighs, and abs to make sure the muscles in these areas are relaxed.

If you are still unsure, consult your Health Care Professional.

How do I clean Emy and its charging case?

Emy is easy to clean. Simply wipe it with mild soap and water (do not use abrasive products). For hygienic reasons, Emy is perfectly smooth and 100% waterproof. It can therefore be completely immersed in water. As a precaution, however, we recommend that you do not use the Emy Kegel trainer in water (bathtub, ocean, etc.).

If you are prone to infections, clean Emy before and after each use with a pH-neutral antibacterial cleaner designed for intimate accessories.

Make sure the trainer is completely dry before storing it in its case.

Do not use the trainer in extreme cold or heat (below 0°C/32°F or above 40°C/104°F).

If the trainer goes unused for long periods of time, recharge it every 2-3 months (at least) to make sure it remains in good condition.

To clean the charging case, simply remove the trainer and wipe the case with a disinfectant wipe. Do not immerse the case in water or store it in extreme cold or heat (below 0°C/32°F or above 40°C/104°F).
